ArcGIS Server – Custom Web Applications

Note: software@uwm.edu will be able to provide detailed information about licensing and costs

Your workstation will need have the following software:

1.    ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap and ArcCatalog 9.2 SP4) - ask software@uwm.edu for software and cost

a.    SP4 - Service Pack 4 for Desktop can be downloaded from ESRI

2.    ArcGIS Server Web ADF Runtime for the Microsoft .Net Framework – ask for ArcGIS Server Enterprise CD from software@uwm.edu, there is cost for the software

a.    SP4 - Service Pack 4 for ArcGIS Server Web ADF Runtime for the Microsoft .Net Framework or Service Pack 4 for ArcGIS Server for the Microsoft .NET Framework can be downloaded from ESRI.

3.    Visual Studio 2005 SP1 – ask Software@uwm.edu for software and cost

a.    SP1 - Service Pack 1 can applied using Windows Update

4.    Visual Studio Express 2005 Editions SP1 – Free downloads from Microsoft

a.    SP1 - Service Pack 1 can applied using Windows Update

b.    There are limitations to using Visual Studio Express 2005 Editions

Warning: DO NOT use Visual Studio 2008 or Visual Studio Express 2008 Editions.

DO NOT have .Net Framework 3.5 installed on your workstation.

All of these software will break the ArcGIS web applications, including ArcGIS Manager which use .Net Framework 2.0.

If you want to create Web Application from Visual Studio,

1.    You should have ArcGIS Manager create the web application – this will create the correct application settings and security for your application with IIS server.

2.    Use the M drive for your primary application building in Visual Studio

3.    Next you can delete all contents in web application directory created with ArcGIS Manager. This action should allow you to create new template page for your ArcGIS Web application in the same web application directory.

What You Need to do Before You Work with ArcGIS Server
If you want to access all the ArcGIS server recourses, you will need to on campus
If You are off campus - you will need to install and setup the UWM VPN

UWM VPN - I was able to make it work. After you install VPN Software and reboot your computer.  You should see new an icon by your computer clock.  Please click on the new VPN icon, it will ask for a login.  You want to enter your ePanther Login and Password. 
 
Note: The mapping for ArcGIS Server will ask for Login information, you must type YourLogin@ad.uwm.edu.
1. You will need to download the correct version "mapArcGIS" file for the server you have access to use.
 
You will have to extract the mapArcGIS.bat from zip file. 
 
Double click the the mapArcGIS.bat to map "M" drive to the ArcGIS server for your proper work environment for the ArcGIS server:

There are downloads for UWM Campus ArcGIS Server and GIS4 (SARUP) ArcGIS server.
 
 
You will Choose orbase on the server you have access to use for your projects. 
 
The SARUP GIS 4 class will use:
Double click on , you will be prompted to save the zip file to your desktop.
 
 
Click .
 
Choose location to save the zip file to your desktop.  this example it is being saved to the "Desktop".
 
 
After has been saved to your desktop.
 
 
Click .
 
 
Choose
 
next you will be asked for location to extract .
 
 
Locate and Double click.
 
you will see Commandline Prompt run, DO NOT CLOSE it while it runs
 
Note: If You are using the UWM VPN - The mapping for ArcGIS Server will ask for Login information, you must type YourLogin@ad.uwm.edu.
 
 
Verfying that you have mapped to the ArcGIS server by clicking on Start menu Start Menu, Next Choose and click on .
 
 
 
 
You should located in  .
 
Double click 
You will see four folders: 
 
 
 - location for your ArcGIS Server data(shapefiles or ArcSDE geodatabase), MXD files for your ArcGIS Server Projects.
 
When you double Click on .
You will see five Folders under .
 
This is the location for your project data for ArcGIS Server.
 
This is the location where you will save your mxd from ArcGIS Desktop for ArcGIS Server projects.
 
 
 
- location for your ArcGIS Server project websites.
 
This where you will located your ArcGIS Server project website created from ArcGIS Server manager
 
DO NOT touch or Delete this folder from ArcGIS server.
 
-location for ArcIMS Project Files 
There are four Folders for ArcIMS - not used for GIS4 Class projects
 
-location for your class websites and Map Mashup Website.
 
This is normal location for your websites for Map Mashups.
 
 
 
Maping Drive to the ArcGIS Server - Only Works on Campus
You will have to extract the mapArcGIS.bat from zip file. 
 
Double click the the mapArcGIS.bat to map "M" drive to the ArcGIS server for your proper work environment for the ArcGIS server:
